A Landmark Reform, Says Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the passing of the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament as a “watershed moment” for India. He emphasized that the legislation is a significant step toward protecting the dignity and rights of every citizen, and reflects the government’s commitment to fairness and equality.

“The amendment to the Waqf Act is a watershed moment. It showcases our commitment to equality and fairness. Our government is dedicated to prioritising the dignity of every Indian,” — PM Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter)

Ensuring Equality and Justice

The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, aims to bring transparency and balance to the management of waqf properties and prevent arbitrary claims on properties belonging to non-Muslim individuals or communities. The law enforces stricter scrutiny and legal procedure before any property can be declared as waqf land.

Key Features of the Amendment

  • Properties cannot be declared as waqf without due legal and evidentiary process.
  • Any encroachment or claim on land must go through judicial review before being recognized.
  • State governments’ roles in verifying and managing such claims are better defined.

Opposition’s Concerns

Some opposition parties and minority organizations have raised concerns over the bill, suggesting that it could potentially undermine the property rights of the Muslim community. However, the government has firmly stated that the bill is not against any religious group but is meant to uphold the property rights of all Indian citizens.

Support from BJP Leaders

Several BJP leaders backed the legislation, saying that it was a long-overdue correction to prevent misuse of waqf claims, especially those that may lead to land grabbing in the name of religion. They highlighted the need to protect private and public property from being wrongfully classified as waqf land.

A Step Toward Social Justice

The government has positioned the bill as a necessary reform for promoting transparency, equality, and justice in property matters. PM Modi’s statement underscores that this is not merely a legal amendment but a societal change intended to ensure fair treatment for all citizens, irrespective of religion.
