International cinema has lost one of its distinctive contemporary voices. Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio, whose film A Fantastic Woman won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2018, has died at the age of 52.

His family announced his death on November 6, saying he had passed away for health reasons. The family did not disclose a specific cause and requested privacy during this difficult period.

Lelio’s death has drawn attention across the international film industry because of the artistic influence of his work, particularly films that explored identity, relationships, social expectations and the emotional experiences of ordinary people.

The film that brought Chile international recognition

Lelio became internationally recognised through A Fantastic Woman, released in 2017 and directed by him.

Starring Daniela Vega, the film follows Marina, a transgender woman dealing with grief and discrimination after the death of her partner. Its sensitive storytelling and powerful central performance brought international attention to the experiences of transgender people.

At the 2018 Academy Awards, the film won Best Foreign Language Film, becoming the first Chilean feature film to receive the award. The achievement was a landmark moment for Chilean cinema and strengthened the country’s presence in international filmmaking.

The film also received several other major honours, including the Goya Award for Best Ibero-American Film and the Independent Spirit Award for Best International Film.

From Gloria to international filmmaking

Before his Oscar success, Lelio had already established himself as an important filmmaker through Gloria (2013).

The film follows a woman in her late fifties as she navigates relationships, independence and the search for companionship. Its lead actor, Paulina García, won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Lelio’s ability to portray complex emotions without relying on conventional dramatic formulas became a defining feature of his work. He later directed Gloria Bell (2018), an English-language version of the same story starring Julianne Moore.

His other internationally recognised films included The Sacred Family (2005), Christmas (2009), The Year of the Tiger (2011), Disobedience (2017), The Wonder (2022) and The Wave (2025).

Working with leading international actors

Lelio’s career increasingly connected Latin American cinema with major international productions. He worked with actors including Julianne Moore, Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams and Florence Pugh.

Disobedience, starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, explored relationships, personal freedom and the pressures of a conservative religious community.

In The Wonder, starring Florence Pugh, Lelio adapted Emma Donoghue’s novel into a period drama examining belief, family and the power of social influence.

His films often placed deeply personal stories within larger social settings, giving audiences different perspectives on identity and human relationships.

His final projects and unfinished work

Lelio’s most recent completed film, The Wave (2025), was a musical inspired by the feminist demonstrations and student movements that took place in Chile in 2018.

The project marked another return to stories connected with Chilean society and its changing cultural landscape.

At the time of his death, Lelio had also begun working on Poeta Chileno, an adaptation of the novel by Chilean writer Alejandro Zambra. The project was in production in Santiago. His death has therefore left uncertainty surrounding the future of the film.

No announcement about the production’s future should be assumed until the filmmakers, producers or family provide further information.

A distinctive contribution to Chilean cinema

Lelio’s achievement extended beyond international awards. He helped bring Chilean stories to audiences around the world while working with themes that crossed geographical and cultural boundaries.

His films frequently explored the tension between individual identity and society’s expectations. Rather than presenting characters through simple labels, he gave attention to their relationships, vulnerabilities, choices and emotional lives.

A Fantastic Woman was particularly important in bringing a transgender protagonist into the centre of a major internationally recognised film. Its success also contributed to wider conversations about representation in cinema.

Tributes from Chile’s cultural community

Following the announcement, Chilean cultural institutions and members of the film community paid tribute to Lelio’s contribution.

The Chilean Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences highlighted the lasting impact of his work, describing a filmography that expanded the possibilities of Chilean storytelling and reached audiences internationally.

His family also remembered him as a person who had made a meaningful contribution to Chilean culture. The family has asked for privacy and consideration as they grieve.

A legacy that will continue through his films

Sebastián Lelio’s career demonstrated how stories rooted in one country’s culture can connect with audiences across the world.

From Gloria to the Oscar-winning A Fantastic Woman, his work explored the complexity of human relationships and the importance of allowing people to tell their own stories.

His death at 52 brings a premature end to a career that was still developing new projects and creative directions. The films he leaves behind, however, will continue to introduce audiences to his distinctive approach to cinema and the human stories he chose to bring to the screen.
