A container ship has sunk in the Black Sea after being struck by three maritime drones off Bulgaria’s coast, highlighting growing security risks for commercial shipping in the region.
The vessel, named Contship Jet, was sailing from Haifa in Israel to Constanța in Romania when it came under attack on 28 October. All 18 crew members were rescued, according to Bulgarian authorities and the ship’s management company.
The incident is part of a wider series of attacks on commercial vessels in the western Black Sea, raising concerns among countries bordering the region and their NATO allies.
Three maritime drones struck the vessel
Bulgaria’s Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said three unmanned maritime vehicles struck the container ship approximately 21 nautical miles off the Bulgarian coast, near Shabla.
The vessel was sailing under the Liberian flag and was managed by a Greek company. It was carrying 421 containers when it was hit.
The crew abandoned the badly damaged ship as Bulgarian naval and border police vessels moved to assist. All 18 sailors—14 Filipinos and four Ukrainians—were evacuated safely and taken to the port city of Varna.
The ship later sank, according to Bulgaria’s maritime authorities.
Concerns over the ship’s cargo
The sinking has also raised questions about possible environmental risks.
Reports indicate that some containers aboard the vessel carried lithium-ion batteries, flammable liquids, gases and other potentially hazardous materials.
Bulgarian Navy teams conducted preliminary checks and reported no visible signs of pollution in the areas inspected. Authorities have continued assessing the situation, and the full environmental impact remains unclear.
The loss of the vessel and its cargo could also have commercial and insurance implications for shipping operators using the Black Sea route.
A wider pattern of attacks on commercial shipping
The attack comes amid a series of incidents involving merchant vessels in the Black Sea, including waters within the exclusive economic zones of Bulgaria and Romania.
These incidents have raised concerns that the Russia-Ukraine conflict is increasingly affecting international commercial shipping routes.
Ukraine has blamed Russia for attacks on vessels in the region, while Moscow has denied involvement in recent incidents. However, no confirmed attribution has been established for the attack on Contship Jet.
Bulgaria has sought greater assistance from its allies to strengthen maritime monitoring and protection.
NATO members discuss Black Sea security
The incident took place as defence ministers from Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey were meeting in Sofia to discuss security in the Black Sea.
The three NATO members condemned attacks threatening commercial vessels, maritime infrastructure and the safety of navigation.
They also agreed to strengthen intelligence sharing, early-warning capabilities and coordination in the region.
The discussions reflect growing concern that repeated attacks could disrupt shipping, increase insurance costs and threaten the safety of international crews.
Why the incident matters
The Black Sea remains an important route for trade connecting Europe with the wider world. It is particularly significant for the movement of agricultural products, industrial goods, energy-related cargo and other commercial shipments.
Repeated attacks on merchant vessels could make shipping more expensive and uncertain. They also increase the risk of further escalation between countries involved in or affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
For Bulgaria and its regional partners, the immediate challenge is to improve maritime surveillance and protect civilian vessels without allowing the security situation to deteriorate further.
The rescue of all 18 crew members was a positive outcome, but the sinking of Contship Jet underlines the vulnerability of commercial shipping in a region where military tensions continue to affect civilian activity.
