Apple has unveiled its first Mac with a touchscreen: the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display. Announced on 28 October, the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch laptops combine a tandem OLED panel with Apple’s M5 Pro or M5 Max chips. The launch marks a major change for the Mac, which has relied on keyboard, trackpad and external input devices rather than direct touch on its main display.
Display and touch features
Apple’s PROLED XDR display uses tandem OLED technology and supports an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, a claimed contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1 and peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits. The panel supports P3 and Adobe RGB colour spaces, targeting professional workflows such as photography, video editing and design.
The touch sensor is integrated into the display panel rather than added as a separate layer, which Apple says reduces latency. Users can scroll, zoom, drag items and interact directly with compatible creative apps, while retaining the keyboard and trackpad. Apple also brings Dynamic Island to the Mac, with Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI integration in macOS 27.
M5 Pro and M5 Max, memory and connectivity
The touchscreen model is offered with M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, with configurations supporting up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage. Apple lists three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe charging, a headphone jack, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera. Apple says battery life can reach up to 24 hours, depending on configuration and use.
These are Apple’s stated specifications; independent long-duration testing will be needed to assess real-world battery life, touch workflows and OLED image-retention performance. The touchscreen model should not be confused with the separate 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 announced on 27 October, which uses a non-touch display.
India pricing and availability
Apple India’s listed starting prices are ₹3,49,900 for the 14-inch M5 Pro model and ₹4,09,900 for the 16-inch M5 Pro model. M5 Max configurations start at ₹5,49,900 for 14 inches and ₹5,89,900 for 16 inches. Eligible education pricing is lower. Final prices vary with memory, storage and other build-to-order options.
Pre-orders opened on 28 October. Apple lists availability beginning 9 November in India, while availability in some other markets begins 6 November. Buyers should check the Apple India store for current delivery estimates and configuration-specific prices.
Why this launch matters
The launch brings direct touch input to Apple’s professional laptop range without removing its traditional controls. That could make some creative tasks more direct, but the premium pricing means the value will depend on whether the new display, chip options and touch-enabled workflows meaningfully improve a user’s work. Independent reviews and app updates will help establish how much difference the change makes in everyday use.
