Andrew Garfield says he never saw or spoke to Sam Altman while filming Artificial outside the OpenAI chief’s home, disputing Altman’s recent recollection that the two men waved to each other. The conflicting accounts have drawn attention to Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film, which places Garfield in the role of the technology executive at the center of OpenAI’s 2023 leadership upheaval.
In a GQ interview published November 4, Garfield said he had replayed Altman’s account several times because he could not understand how it might have happened. He said the production was filming outside Altman’s house, but the crew had been told Altman was away. Garfield recalled seeing a security guard, not Altman, and said he had never encountered him in person.
Garfield also said he did not use a body double for the scene, so he could not explain who Altman may have mistaken for him. An OpenAI representative told GQ that Altman was home during filming and maintained that he waved to Garfield. The two descriptions remain at odds, and neither account has established exactly what Altman saw that morning.
What Altman said about the encounter
Altman described the moment in a Vanity Fair interview, saying notices had appeared on his street about filming. He said he later walked out to get coffee, saw a man dressed like him carrying a similar backpack, realized the production was recreating him, and exchanged a wave with the performer. Altman characterized it as a brief, strange encounter.
Variety reported Garfield’s response on November 5, bringing the disagreement into sharper focus just as the film’s profile is rising. The question is a small behind-the-scenes detail, but the contrast is striking: one account describes an unusual real-life meeting with an actor portraying Altman, while the other says Garfield was not there and never met him.
Garfield’s role in Luca Guadagnino’s film
Artificial is directed by Guadagnino and is scheduled to open in theaters on Christmas Day through Neon, according to Variety. The story covers the turbulent 2023 period in which Altman was removed as OpenAI chief executive and then returned days later. The film’s cast includes Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, Monica Barbaro as former OpenAI technology chief Mira Murati, Yura Borisov as former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, and Mark Rylance as AI researcher Geoffrey Hinton.
The project reunites Garfield with a technology-executive role more than a decade after The Social Network, though he is playing a different figure and a different chapter in Silicon Valley’s story. GQ’s profile describes the film as a drama with an unsettling edge, while Garfield has said the subject matter raises concerns about the influence and accountability of powerful technology leaders.
For now, the encounter outside Altman’s home remains a disagreement between the recollections reported by GQ. The film itself is due later this year, giving audiences a dramatized account of OpenAI’s leadership crisis while the real people involved continue to offer their own perspectives.
