Adani Cleared: From Target of Defamation to Symbol of Resilience
Curated by the team of Boldvoices.in, Dated 19/09/2025

On September 18, 2025, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued its long-awaited order giving the Adani Group a complete clean chit from all accusations made by U.S. short-seller Hindenburg Research in 2023. The allegations had once shaken India’s financial markets, wiped out billions in investor wealth, and created doubts around the credibility of one of India’s biggest business empires. Today, with SEBI’s order, it is clear that Adani was wrongfully and intentionally targeted in a global smear campaign, and his eventual vindication cements him as a symbol of resilience against orchestrated defamation.
The Smear Attempt: Allegations Designed to Defame
In January 2023, Hindenburg Research launched an explosive report accusing the Adani Group of insider trading, stock manipulation, use of shell companies, and non-disclosure of related-party transactions. It claimed that companies like Adicorp Enterprises, Milestone Tradelinks, and Rehvar Infrastructure were mere conduits used to route funds secretly.
The timing and manner of these allegations suggested not just financial critique but an attempt to damage reputation and erode investor confidence. The result was devastating: Adani companies lost nearly USD 150 billion in market value, and investors were pushed into panic. The attack was global in its impact, designed to portray Adani as the face of corporate fraud in India.
SEBI’s Verdict: No Wrongdoing, No Manipulation
After a meticulous multi-year investigation covering transactions from FY 2012–2013 through FY 2020–21, SEBI categorically dismissed each of Hindenburg’s claims:
- No Related-Party Violations
Transactions branded as “related party” by Hindenburg did not qualify as such under the law during those years. SEBI clarified that applying later rules retrospectively was legally impossible. - Loans Were Legitimate and Repaid
Loans routed through the so-called conduit entities were fully interest-bearing, accounted for, and completely repaid. No siphoning, no diversion, no malpractice. - No Insider Trading or Market Manipulation
SEBI found no evidence that Adani insiders manipulated stock prices or withheld disclosures. The companies had followed the rules as they existed then. - No Public Shareholding Violations
The minimum public shareholding rules were never breached, and no penalties were warranted.
In short, SEBI declared that all allegations lacked merit, and Adani was innocent of every charge.
Adani Emerges Stronger
For Gautam Adani, the verdict is not just legal relief—it is vindication after one of the most vicious global defamation campaigns in recent memory. Adani had consistently maintained that the accusations were “baseless and motivated,” and SEBI’s clean chit proves him right.
The Adani Group has not only survived the storm but is now thriving again. Stocks have rebounded, investor confidence is gradually being restored, and Adani himself stands taller—as someone who faced false allegations with patience, faith, and determination.
A Champion of Indian Enterprise
This episode highlights more than just one corporate battle. It is a story of how a leading Indian industrialist was deliberately targeted to weaken confidence in India’s markets and growth story. But despite the massive losses and reputational attacks, Adani has come out as a champion:
- A champion of resilience, proving that truth eventually prevails.
- A champion of Indian enterprise, showing that India’s regulatory framework is strong enough to separate fact from fiction.
- A champion for investors, assuring them that the storm created by falsehoods cannot sink genuine businesses.
The Hindenburg saga was never about facts; it was about narratives and manipulation of perception. Adani was wrongfully and intentionally targeted in a campaign that momentarily shook the markets but could not destroy the foundation of integrity on which his companies stand.
With SEBI’s order, Gautam Adani has not just cleared his name—he has turned the tables. He walks away not as someone who merely survived allegations, but as a victor who proved that truth is stronger than defamation.
Adani’s story is now one of triumph: a man wronged, who emerged as a champion.
