In a case that has stirred deep concern within U.S. security circles, two citizens of China—Yunqing Jian (33) and Zunyong Liu (34)—have been accused of secretly bringing a dangerous agricultural fungus into the United States. The charges were filed by American authorities after the fungus was allegedly brought without official permission for research purposes at a university lab.

The fungus in question, Fusarium graminearum, is infamous in the farming world. It causes a disease known as head blight in key crops such as wheat, maize, and barley, leading to poor harvests and financial losses. Beyond the damage to fields, this fungus produces poisons that can be harmful to both humans and animals, causing issues like vomiting, liver problems, and reproductive damage. Due to its high-risk nature, it is also considered a potential tool for agricultural sabotage.

The case came to light when Liu was stopped at the Detroit airport in mid-2024. Authorities found him in possession of suspicious biological samples, which he admitted were meant for study at a university in Michigan, where Jian worked. However, further investigation revealed that the institution did not have the necessary permits to handle such high-risk biological material.

Documents and messages examined during the inquiry revealed that both men were aware of the sensitive nature of the substance. Jian’s personal devices reportedly contained messages of allegiance to China’s ruling party, adding another layer of concern to the matter.

At present, Jian has been detained in the United States and is awaiting a bond hearing. Liu, on the other hand, managed to return to China and may not face further legal action, as the two countries do not have a formal extradition agreement.

This episode raises critical questions about the control and monitoring of foreign nationals involved in advanced scientific work in the U.S., especially in fields with potential biosecurity risks. It also serves as a reminder of the thin line between academic research and the possible misuse of science in the wrong hands.
