At this moment, a new drama is unfolding on the political stage of Bangladesh, where the interim leader of the country and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohammad Yunus and the powerful army are openly revealing their differences. This struggle for power is no longer just political but is moving toward institutional instability.

Rift in the Relationship Between the Army and the Government

The army headquarters recently issued a statement claiming that there is no discord between the government and the military forces. However, the reality is that Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman has expressed disagreement with the plan to establish a humanitarian corridor along the Myanmar border — a plan that Yunus’s government had prepared to assist Rohingya refugees.

Moreover, serious disagreements have emerged between the two regarding the date of the general elections in the country. The army wants the elections to be held in December of this year, while the Yunus administration wants to postpone them until March 2026 to complete necessary reforms.

Growing Crisis for Yunus

Several sectors of the country — including teachers, healthcare workers, and other government employees — have taken to the streets demanding salary increases and job security. These protests have further complicated the situation of the interim government. There are also rumors that Yunus is considering resigning, though his close associates say he is still willing to shoulder responsibility.

Political Storm or Winds of Change?

Yunus himself has described the country’s situation as “an invisible war,” with waves of pressure and opposition rising from all directions. The opposition claims this is a conspiracy by neighboring countries to exert influence over the nation. In these circumstances, the growing gap between the army and the interim government is not only fostering political instability but also casting doubts on the democratic direction of the country.

The question now is whether Mohammad Yunus and the army will reach an agreement, or will Bangladesh move toward yet another uncertain future?
