Two UK Labour Party MPs, Yuan Yang and Abtisam Mohamed, were stopped and denied entry into Israel on Saturday. Israeli authorities claimed the MPs planned to criticize the country and share negative views about its actions.
The MPs said they were on an official visit and had flown into Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport from Luton, along with their aides. But Israeli officials disputed this, saying it wasn’t an official government trip and accused the MPs of misleading intentions.
Israel also said the two MPs had previously supported boycotts and sanctions against the country. Officials claimed the MPs were known for spreading misinformation and backing campaigns that aim to isolate Israel on the world stage.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy strongly criticized Israel’s decision. He called it “unacceptable” and “deeply concerning.” Lammy said he had raised the issue directly with Israeli officials and assured the MPs of his support.
This situation comes as violence in Gaza continues to escalate. After a short-lived ceasefire, Israel resumed military operations. Over 1,200 people have died in Gaza recently, bringing the total number of deaths since the conflict began to more than 50,000. The violence started after Hamas launched an attack on Israel in October 2023, killing over 1,200 people.
The MPs’ detention has sparked a diplomatic disagreement between the UK and Israel. It has also raised concerns about how Israel handles foreign visitors who are critical of its policies, especially during times of war.
