This declaration comes amid India’s growing concerns over China’s increasing influence in the Indian Ocean region.
Grand Welcome for PM Modi in Colombo
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Colombo on Friday evening to a warm welcome from top Sri Lankan leaders, including Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, and Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar.
On Saturday, he was honored with a ceremonial welcome at Colombo’s historic Independence Square — a first for a visiting foreign leader. President Dissanayake also conferred upon Modi the ‘Mithra Vibhushana’ award, a significant gesture symbolizing the close ties between the two nations.
Key Agreements Strengthen Bilateral Ties
During bilateral talks, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to mutual security and regional cooperation. A significant outcome was the signing of a new defense cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening strategic engagement.
The two countries also agreed to develop Trincomalee into a regional energy hub. Additionally, a grant assistance deal was signed for India to support multiple sectors in Sri Lanka’s eastern provinces. Modi and Dissanayake jointly inaugurated the Sampur solar power project virtually, marking progress in energy collaboration.
India Reiterates Support for Sri Lanka
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s steadfast support during difficult times, including assistance following the 2019 Easter terror attacks, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and amid Sri Lanka’s recent economic crisis.
These developments highlight the growing strength of India-Sri Lanka relations, especially in light of evolving regional security dynamics.
